Son édition des œuvres de <a href="Georg_Friedrich_Haendel" title="Georg Friedrich Haendel">Georg Friedrich Haendel</a> et ses divers ouvrages faisant autorité sur d'autres compositeurs le désignent comme l'un des pionniers de la <a href="Musicologie" title="Musicologie">musicologie</a> du <a href="XIXe_si%C3%A8cle" title="XIXe siècle"><abbr class="abbr" title="19ᵉ siècle"><span class="romain">XIX</span><sup style="font-size:72%">e</sup></abbr> siècle</a>.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Notes_biographiques">Notes biographiques</h2></div>
<p>Friedrich Chrysander étudia la philosophie à l'Université de Rostock dont il fut diplômé. Il vécut ensuite quelque temps en Angleterre. Revenu en Allemagne, il résida tantôt à Lauenburg, tantôt à Vellahn dans le Mecklenburg. À partir de 1866, il s'établit à <a href="Arrondissement_de_Bergedorf" title="Arrondissement de Bergedorf">Bergedorf</a> près de Hambourg.
</p><p>Chysander fonda en <a href="1856_en_musique_classique" title="1856 en musique classique">1856</a>, avec l'historien Georg Gervinus, la <i>Deutsche Händel-Gesellschaft</i> (Société Händel allemande) dans le but d'éditer les œuvres complètes de <a href="Georg_Friedrich_Haendel" title="Georg Friedrich Haendel">Georg Friedrich Haendel</a>. La société disparut seulement quatre ans plus tard, après quoi Chrysander reprit seul le travail de compilation des œuvres complètes. Pour ce faire, il se procura un nombre important de partitions et se rendit à Londres pour dénicher des autographes. Pour financer cette étude, il dut vendre la collection rassemblée à la ville de Hambourg.
